SUMMARY

This project (more here) mobilizes Richard Sennett’s “open city” theory to discuss, through the heritage of urban planning in Belo Horizonte and Chicago, the potential of urban and architectural spaces for public use. First, the project presents Chicago’s historical influence on urban planning in Belo Horizonte. It then presents two case studies, first, Edifício Arcângelo Maletta’s (“Maletta”), and secondly, Mercado Novo. The article points to the importance of urban models in the definition of rigid urban forms and spatial segregation and, via ruptures and consistencies observed in the case studies, advances the discussion of strategies to break with this heritage and build new social and spatial paradigms. This project was originally published in Portuguese and presented at two Brazilian academic conferences: Seminario da Historia da Cidade e Urbanismo (Belo Horizonte, 2022) and Arquisur (Porto Alegre, 2022).
